  • Trading from Canada

    Hi all,

    Just wondering how everybody is tailoring their trading strategies for different markets/countries.
    I can't exactly follow SMT or Poly's trades because I am based in Canada.

    What I use (TSX):

    HBU.TO - 2x gold
    HZU.TO - 2x silver
    HSU.TO - 2x SP500 up
    HSD.TO - 2x SP500 down

    HVU.TO - TVIX alternative

    However, I have a small problem:

    I could not find an equivalent for GDX GDXJ, or UUP / Euro in the Canadian market.

    So far:
    GDX, GDXJ -> I just use SLW

    UUP -> I tried HDU, but got burned because volume is close to 0.
    Euro short/long -> sitting out

    Would be great if you could share your strategies.

    20120308 1:30pm - fixed HSU to 2x up - thanks for the correction

    GDX = XGD.TO

    GDXJ = ZJG.TO ----Super low volume..warning.

    UUP ????? - CDN dollar usually runs inverse to US dollar. Gains will be muted.

    Check this site out - http://www.horizonsetfs.com/pub/en/Products.aspx

    Also, HSU.TO is 'bull plus = up' not down as you have written.

    Consider SLW as a silver "bank' stock or silver 'Miner'. I wouldnt think of it as a gold miner, as you have it.

    Good luck

      I'm actually very keen to hear suggestions on this topic, I get these questions all the time. Same for the European and Asia/Pacific Traders on here.

        Although you should be able to purchase any US equities via your canadian broker, you can always open an account with any online broker based in the US. Imo, it will be easier to do so if you mostly trade/invest in equities listed on the US markets.

        I had open an account Ameritrade while living in Canada, and I continued trading from it while living in France. I have never had any issues.
